What the health. More like what the fuck. If you have seen Netflix's newest documentary you know exactly what I'm talking about. If you haven't, let me rewind a bit. On a slow day at work a couple days ago I decided to watch a new documentary instead of filling my brain with more nonsense television. Netflix suggested one of their newest and so I clicked and watched away. I have watched plenty of food documentaries like Forks Over Knifes, Hungry For Change, Super Size Me, etc. They've all scared me short term, but not quite like What The Health.
For those of you who aren't as educated when it comes to nutrition, this film does more than just educate. As a typical American we all believe somewhat of the same morals when it comes to our food. Each meal should contain a vegetable, healthy fat, protein and a healthy carb. Eat three of these kinds of meals a day and you're golden. Wrongo. Then we found out it should be six smaller meals a day still containing the same food groups but to keep your metabolism going through out the day for maximum weight loss. Okay, easy enough. But what if I told you that every food you were eating to fill in those groups were in one way or another not even good for you. Like your protein. MIND BLOWN! We are often told to stay away from red meat because our bodies can't break it down as easily and it's higher in fat and cholesterol. We're guided to eat poultry and fish since it is more of a lean protein. When you think of animal protein that isn't good for you, what comes to mind? Is it bacon, sausage, deli meats, hamburgers, hot dogs? What if I told you it's not just the red meats. What if I told you it isn't just pork and cow products but chicken, turkey and fish too. What if I told you that all animal protein no matter what animal it comes from isn't good for you... My heart sank a little bit hearing that my salmon and white fish meals I've learned to love (since they are healthier) are in fact not healthy at all. Hearing that even if an animal is organic or farm raised it makes no difference. The pesticides, the GMO's, the carcinogenic's, the e coli, the bacteria, the filth and the unsanitary living environments, just to name a few is what is going into these animals and surrounding them. For me, seeing is always believing. While I obviously know a hamburger comes from a cow, not seeing the actual process of it being created was always a blurred line for me. And maybe you're similar in that sense. But have no fear, it is all out in the open now. What the Health is so much more then just a documentary that is trying to scare you or convince you of a vegan diet. It is a small opening to the bigger picture. It is just the start of the conversation that needs to be spoken about to everyone. It is no longer just bad mouthing fast food restaurants and their production of their meats, but the meats you purchase at your local grocery store or at Whole Foods because you think it is safer. Our society is being lied to. We are being told one thing while something completely opposite is going on behind closed doors. I am far from one of the vegan, save the planet, activists BUT shouldn't we all be heading in that direction? This is our planet. These are our bodies, our families bodies, your unborn child's bodies. Don't you want the best for those around you? Don't you want to grow old and see your great grandchildren? I can't imagine anyone wants to die early, or from illness all because they just didn't simply know their diet was harming them. I urge you to do two things - watch it. Watch What the Health and the second is, comment below! I want to know your take on taking baby steps to change your health!
